Kerekes Gábor

After a short-lived attempt at painting pictures, I started to build large-scale, site-specific installations. Although I have worked on collages in the last few years, I still engage in the genre of installation--only from another aspect. My aim is to create a kind of space with my collages, therefore I use the walls of the exhibition rooms as an empty field for compositions. With these compositions I try to create a situation for the spectator. I regard my working method as a game wherewith in some ways or another I can influence the relations among the spectator, the picture and the space.

Recycling plays a significant role in my works. I need a great amount of newspapers and magazines in order to get the required pictures for my collages. I generated a network including housholds of friends and acquaintances as well as press offices of publishers to harvest the basic materials in an effective way.

The process of building up a collage can last for years owning to the fact that they are prepared with meticulous care and the rhythm of my work largely depends on the amount of suitable pictures.

In my works I want to touch on deeper content to mediate a mentality with the viewer. My themes concern non-violence, the value of labour, our relationship to our environment and cultural heritage, to people’s position in the world and their possibilities to reposition themselves in it.
